In and Out

It’s so easy to look inward:
to curl into a little ball of self
like those little pillbugs
we used to find;
to circle the wagons
and present blank faces to the world;
to sit complacently
on our comfortable lives
and think only of today and
what’s for dinner.
Much harder to bestir
ourselves and walk
through the outside world;
to visit and explore and remember,
along with all those
pushy, noisy, hurrying others,
that crowds and traffic
and life
are all messy, but not

to be avoided.
