Who are these people?
Hat-bedecked and chattering,
with the occasional
reluctant husband,
arrayed in slow-moving
conga lines
with brochures for study
and fanning purposes,
raising soft murmurs of appreciation
or disapproval
as they inspect the premises.
An arrangement here,
a color choice there,
an occasional ooh,
some knowing ahs—
appeasing the curious, the envious,
and the just-plain-nosy us
once a year
in Alexandria.
