Poetry Month: April (the missing week #1): Suspension

Suspension

Dangling between atrocities this week,
turning, helplessly turning
from explosion to explosion,
from death to destruction,
from government ineptitude
to legislative ignorance,
I wonder:
Is this the end of days
of which we have been warned,
or just the entropic mess to which
we have deteriorated?
Tragedy follows tragedy,
and we console ourselves
with stories of the helpers,
the Samaritans who stop by the roadside
and minister to the victims,
who root out weeds in our human garden,
who proffer hope for our humanity.
And yet, we fail in combat with the sower:
the intolerant, abusive,
arrogant wrong-- the ideologues
to whom we say:
Stop and see the children, the innocent, who suffer.
Look at the senseless carnage, the loss, the devastation.
Listen to the voice within that speaks
of peace.
