Birthdays/ Valentines
It’s so easy to confuse these, nowadays—
Fifty years of valentines,
Heartfelt, pink, and pretty;
and even more of birthday cards,
signed with love and promises
of years to come.
There are fewer surprises now—
more constants, more realities,
more comfortable chairs,
more companionable silence,
more simple meals
and shorter trips—
friends and family in place of
adventures and startling discovery.
We are older now,
but in spite of that,
the wishes are fresh and fervent
as all those lacy valentines
as bright as birthday candles.
